ALA Council passes resolution calling for end to Kenya violence

CHICAGO - At the American Library Association (ALA) 2008 Midwinter Meeting, held last month in Philadelphia, the ALA Council adopted a resolution addressing the crisis in Kenya.

Passed on Jan 16, the “Resolution on the Kenya Crisis” calls for an end to the violence in Kenya, as well as a return to the people of rights of the people that have been curtailed during the crisis, including “press and broadcasting freedom and the right to peacefully assemble for the people of Kenya.”

In a letter to the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Washington, D.C., ALA Executive Director Keith Michael Fiels wrote, “The association and its members are very concerned about the current situation in your country, the loss of lives and the erosion of democratic rights.”

The resolution on Kenya can be found on the ALA Website.
