Human Rights Day Events-2008


HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 10 DECEMBER
Sixtieth Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
to be commemorated at United Nations Headquarters.
A number of special events to observe Human Rights Day and to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, 10 December 2008. Members of the media as well as UN staff, delegations, NGOs and members of the public are invited to attend.

# 10 December, 2008, Tunis, Tunisia
Film screening and panel
Four documentary films will be screened - "Silence", "Invente-moi un pays", "Les réfugiés" and "La cage" - which present human rights from different angles in different parts of the world. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. Organized by UNIC Tunis in collaboration with Cinema AfricArt and the Arab Institute for Human Rights.

Launch of The UDHR: An Historical Record of the Drafting Process
This website will provide access to the full text of the historical documents of all meetings from 1946-1948 that led to the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. To be launched on 10 December, the website is a cooperative effort of the UN Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the UN Office in Geneva.

Awarding of United Nations Prizes in the Field of Human Rights
The award is given out every five years in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights. The awards ceremony will take place at the special session of the UN General Assembly commemorating the 60th anniversary of the UDHR.

European Union forum with non-governmental organizations on discrimination against women

NGO Forum at the International Conference Centre in Paris
Marking the end of the French presidency of the European Union this Forum will host 200 non-governmental organizations. The French Republic Human Rights Prize will be given out by the President of the French Republic.

Screening of Human Rights Short Films
A collection of short films on human rights by international artists will be screened at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. Undertaken by the United Nations and the nongovernmental organization Art for the World, these short films have been produced with the creative, logistical and financial support of governments, the private and education sectors and many individuals.
