Out of Obscurity, the Story of the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-in.



This video details a little-known, but nonetheless watershed, chapter in civil rights history. Just before World War II broke out, five young men staged the nation's first sit-in to protest the "separate but equal" treatment of African Americans. The sit-in, at the Alexandria public library, was choreographed by Samuel Wilbert Tucker, a black attorney from Alexandria who went on to become the most celebrated civil rights attorney in Virginia. "Out of Obscurity" is narrated by Dr. Julian Bond, Chairman of the NAACP, who was the voice of "Eyes on the Prize" and numerous other documentaries.
