It's a basic human right to be able to read anything

To mark Banned Books Week the Douglas County Library (OR) had a display of several books that have been banned at one time or another.

Officials at the library say that banned book week is important to remind people that it's a basic human right to be able to read anything they choose.

The 29th annual Banned Books Week Saturday stressed a fundamental right since the country's founding. “No one has the right to tell other people what they can or can't read,” the county system's public services librarian, Chris Crowe, said. “The First Amendment guarantees the right to say and write what you want, but freedom of expression is useless unless people have the freedom to read as well.”
